American Airlines/US Airways Merger
Statement from Mayor Doug Bonebrake
The City of Owasso received more good news today. American Airlines and US Airways announced the two companies will combine to create the new American Airlines – a premier global carrier.
This is great news for our friends at American Airlines. They are our neighbors and our friends.
The transaction will increase efficiency and provide more options for customers. The new American Airlines will strengthen communities nationwide through better service, travel to more destinations, and enhanced job opportunities.
Together, American Airlines and US Airways serve more than 187 million passengers a year and employ more than 100,000 people. The combined airline will offer more than 6,700 daily flights to 329 destinations in 52 countries, including 221 destinations and 691 routes in its domestic network.
Employees including the more than 6,000 in Tulsa will also benefit from being part of a company with a stable financial foundation and a stronger ability to invest in future growth. The combined airline creates a path for employees to receive improved compensation and benefits and enjoy greater opportunities over the long term.
Until the merger is complete, American Airlines and US Airways will remain independent, and it will be business as usual at both airlines.
We will keep you posted as they move forward.
